True Lemon: the Not-So-Secret Weapon for Weight Loss

Photo by David Castillo DominiciLemon Water Weight Loss.” Those four words are a Google search phrase we came across as we were researching how important water is for weight loss.

And when we clicked on lemon water weight loss, hundreds of articles and stories came up. Like “How to Lose Weight for Christmas with the Lemon Juice Diet”, and “How to Use Water with Lemon for Weight Loss” from eHow.

YouTube videos, other blogs, even Livestrong.com joins in with a hot water and lemon recipe for losing pounds and inches!

True Lemon fans, the secret of adding lemon to water for weight loss is out! And it’s not only based on “memes” or hearsay. Science backs it up. This is from a 2008 study published in The Journal of Biochemical Nutrition:

“In conclusion, we suggest in the present study that the supplementation with lemon polyphenols suppressed body weight gain and body fat accumulation by increasing the peroxisomal β-oxidation, which was likely mediated via up-regulation of the mRNA levels of PPARα in the liver. In addition, the levels of serum insulin, glucose and leptin were significantly improved by lemon polyphenols, thereby improving the insulin resistance. We suggest that a supplementation with lemon polyphenols may prevent or improve obesity and insulin resistance by modulating lipid metabolism and preventing metabolic syndrome as a representative, lifestyle-related cluster of diseases caused by an excessively high fat diet.”

All of that is a fancy way to say that lemons helped mice lose weight and normalize their blood sugar, which means that a human diet supplemented with lemon may prevent or improve obesity and insulin resistance. Wow!

Lemon, and of course True Lemon, which is all natural lemon in crystallized form, also have lots of Vitamin C.  According to an article published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2005, researchers reported that having enough Vitamin C in the body helps set off a series of chemical reactions that break down body fat for use as energy. Those who have "depleted vitamin C" status are more resistant to this reaction – and burn less fat.

Besides the chemical reasons for lemon and weight loss, lemon and True Lemon just makes people want to drink more water! That means you fill up your tummy and also drink less sugary, artificial stuff full of empty calories.

People who drink more water have been proven to lose weight: a 2010 University of Virginia study proved that two glasses before meals caused people to take in up to 90 fewer calories per meal. These water drinkers lost weight and kept the weight off!

Tie that fact to the fact that True Citrus flavors are proven to help people drink more water and there you have it: True Lemon - the tastiest, easiest and not-so-secret weapon for weight loss!
